This recipe produces a small amount of cannabis-infused butter, or cannabutter, which can be used in a massive range of recipes to add that extra kick! If your recipe requires more butter than the amounts given here, feel free to multiply up all the amounts.
Ingredients
Equipment
4oz (115g) Butter or Margarine
1/8oz (3.5g) Cannabis buds/hash OR
1/4oz (7g) Cannabis leaves
Small saucepan
Wooden spoon
Sieve (optional)
Method
Melt the butter slowly in a pan. Add 1/8 oz (3.5g) finely ground cannabis, and simmer on a low heat for around 30 minutes. This allows the cannabis to infuse fully into the butter. Take care to keep the heat low, and stir continuously as the butter can burn easily.
After 30 minutes, pour the butter into a jug or tub. As you do this, if you want to remove the bud/hash/leaf, you can pass it through a fine sieve. You won't be wasting any "good stuff", since all the THC should have dissolved into the butter, but if you don't mind getting green bits in your teeth, you can just as easily leave it in.
Allow the cannabutter to set for around an hour, or until relatively hard, before using.
What sort of strength is this butter? Would it be a bad idea to add more than 1/4oz of cannabis leaves to the 4oz of butter? Please reply to my email!!

Does the cannabis have to be dry? Can the butter be made with fresh buds?
ByJohn on 03/06/2008 - 14:58 Rating: Unrated
Keir: It would be a bad idea to add more cannabis to your butter. The more cannabis you add, the harder it is to gauge the strength of the finished product. Also, the butter will become saturated with THC at some point, so you might waste some cannabis, depending on how much extra you add.
Ben: Since you're not smoking the cannabis, I assume that this will work with fresh buds.
Cheers. :)

Got any specific heat to melt the butter in as im not a great cook.
ByJohn on 08/07/2008 - 1:15 Rating: Unrated
Start with a heat as low as possible. It might take a while, but you don't want to let the butter boil. If it starts bubbling, turn it down a bit.

what happens if the butter burns a little? does the THC burn out?

Hey so im woundering....Can I use vegetable oil? Becuase that is what my brownie mix call's for...Please reply quickly, I want to have them ready soon!
ByJohn on 12/07/2008 - 11:06 Rating: Unrated
dre: You don't want the butter to burn because it will taste like crap. Some THC may evaporate at any temperature, so keeping it just low enough to melt the butter is advisable.
jake: THC is soluble in fats, so provided you do the exact same thing with your oil as you'd do with the butter (ie heat for 30 mins on a low temperature and strain), it should work. Don't quote me on that though.

Once butter has set out and hardened do you have to re-melt it once ready to be stirred up with the mix and what not?
ByJo on 13/07/2008 - 21:17 Rating: Unrated
Nope, just add it into your recipe like you would normal butter.

Tomorrow i am making these brownies but i will be using oil. So after heating for 30 mins and then straining i just put it right in the batter or do i have to let it set out for a period of time? if so how long. Also after they are done baking do i have to wait again or are we free to dig in? THanks a bunch, i cant find one god damn site telling me what to do theres so many opinions on this shit haha.

just fyi to the oil instead of butter users: lots of different herbs are infused into oil - quickly through low-heat infusions on the stove, or slowly in a glass jar in the sun.
because many oils have a higher burn threshold than animal fats (you can check online which oils are better for cooking - like olive or grapeseed) you can simmer it on low for a long time to ensure fully extracting the medicinal properties of the plant. if you make a lot - these oils can be applied topically as well (something that has been speculated to have been a treatment in the time of jesus)
you'll be able tell the oil is becoming infused by the change in smell, color and taste. once strained, you can use the oil immediately (assuming your recipe will not be affected by hot instead of room-temp oil).

So say im usin oil. Do i fill a larger pot with water then put a smaller one in it and simmer the oil that way or can i just put it on the stove directly and put on low. if so how long do you recommend i do this for?
ByShady on 16/07/2008 - 17:43 Rating: Unrated
i made a batch last night but it didnt work. i simmered my ground up bud on low for an hour in vegetable oil. then strained it into the batter and put it in the stove for 45 mins on 350 degrees. what did i do wrong?????
Ingredients:
3 eggs
Brownie mix
2 tablespoons of water
roughly 3.5g of bud ground in a coffee grinder
Bymatt on 20/07/2008 - 22:57 Rating: Unrated
ok i messed up to. i let the oil and 7 grams of Bud simmer on low for 13 hours and then chill for 15 minutes in the fridge then i put it in the batter as directed and NOTHING they didnt work, what the fuck did i do wrong???
Bymartisyahu on 22/07/2008 - 16:36 Rating: Unrated
to matt, the instructions say simmer for 30 minutes, not 13 hours... that could be the reason why?

I'm currently living in a University dorm room (we are lucky enough to have opur own kitchens which are shared between 4 bedrooms) and want to make some hash brownies as a birthday present for a friend. This may sound like a really stupid question but I was wondering how much of a marijuana-type-smell will be evident when making the butter and brownies? It's just I don't want to get kicked out of Uni for baking some brownies!
ByJohn on 09/08/2008 - 18:05 Rating: Unrated
When you're making the cannabutter, it smells quite a lot. If you make make that somewhere else and store it until you make the hash brownies (which don't smell anywhere near as much), that should solve your problem.

whats the process from the start. i wanna get this right and not waste any of my bud..its my first time making them
Byk c on 18/08/2008 - 4:11 Rating: Unrated
DO I HAVE TO LET IT SIT IR CAN I JUST POUR IT IN AFTER SIMMERING?
Byserge on 01/09/2008 - 20:01 Rating: Unrated
im new at this, and i wanted to know if the marijuana has to be fresh, or can we do it with dry ?
im kinda lost in this subject.. lol
ByJo on 19/09/2008 - 10:43 Rating: Unrated
KC: It's better to let it sit for the sake of the recipe - then you're using the cannabutter just like normal butter. I can't see it making a great deal of difference if you were to pour it in while it's melted, but don't quote me on that.
Serge: Both fresh or dry should be fine - when you're cooking it rather than smoking it, it shouldn't really make a difference.

I just legally obtained cannabus for medical reasons and am not a smoker, so I need to learn to cook with it. I bought an eighth (of an ounce?) of each a sativa and an indica. Which do I use in brownie recipe? Do I have to grind up an entire eighth for this recipe? Can I just cook it as it is, or do I need to pick it apart first and grind up only the "good stuff"? Then, I guess I need to make the cannbutter, then the brownies? How long will the cannabutter stay good?
Sorry for all the questions, but I am marajuana-naive.
Thank you so much if you can help.

how many cups of oil do you need to use compared to butter?
Is it the same? 4oz..
Byal on 09/10/2008 - 20:40 Rating: Unrated
hey so what works better weed or hash? please done say both:)
ByJo on 11/10/2008 - 19:09 Rating: Unrated
Rose: It doesn't matter whether you use indica or sativa, it'll work just fine with both. Your eighth will indeed be an eighth of an ounce, which is the 'standard' measure it comes in - so this recipe uses a whole eighth (3.5g). Don't worry about picking the stalks or anything out, as you'll strain all of the bits out anyway. I would recommend grinding it up though, to get the most out of the infusion process. After you've followed this recipe, let the butter set until it's a normal buttery consistency (or somewhere near) then follow our The Ultimate Hash Brownie Recipe. It should stay fresh in the fridge as long as normal butter, but if you're making a big batch and intend to store it for a while, let it set firmly in a container, then put just enough water to cover it on top. Keep it in the fridge with a lid on and it should keep for ages.
Lia: We're really sorry, we have no idea how to make cannabis oil...maybe someone else here could help out?
Al: Use weed, as it's easier to strain, and the amount of THC absorbed into the butter might be different with hash.
