A Guide To IRC

Quick Note

To the IRC savvy:

Our current server is irc.hackthissite.org and the channel is #coffeesh0p.

Click Here if you already have an IRC client installed and set up.

I'm guessing many of you windows users will have used MSN messenger, possibly AIM. They are both applications which allow you to communicate with your friends - both have their special features, and both are able to waste time like only a hippie jam festival can. IRC is a powerful, fully-featured, blackhole.

It sucks in time better than a Taiwanese hooker named Sue King. After using IRC you will feel invigorated, inspired, intolerant, inpain, thankful, and overjoyed that you no longer have to use inferior applications to abuse the people you know. Read on my minions to find out how, where and what the fuck I'm droning on about.

Client: mIRC ( Addon: NNscript )

Download mIRC

Explanation:

Now let's make no mistake about it, mIRC takes alot of shit from users as being an 'inferior' client, which is a generally accepted accusation. However, people would argue that said accusations are made redundant when mIRC is used in combination with NNscript which is an enhancement for the client. It basically adds alot of extra, useful features such as RSS news ticker support, balloon tips, email checker, and much, much more.

Installation (mIRC):

  1. Visit the mIRC Downloads website.
  2. Click on the application and save it to disk. (Right Click for the pedantic and hit "Save as".)
  3. After the download is complete, find the application and double click on it.
  4. You can choose to alter the default installation directory ("C:\Program Files\mIRC\") or just hit next.
  5. If the folder contains a previous installation and you want to keep the old files, click the "Make backups" option.
  6. Leave the "Add Icons" option selected.
  7. Select "OK" and you are done.

Installation (NNscript - Optional):

  1. Visit the NNscript Download website.
  2. Select the most recent version and save it to disk.
  3. After the download is complete, find the application and double click on it.
  4. When asked, enter the location of the previous mIRC installation.
  5. Follow the rest of the installer through.

Configuration:

  1. Start mIRC by double clicking the application.
  2. (mIRC) A dialog will be presented, just fill out the boxes with whatever information you want.
  3. (NNscript) Similarly a dialog will be presented to you, only this is much more detailed, much of it you can forget about - just cycle through the optinos and enter information as required.
  4. (mIRC) Under 'Connect' you will see 'Servers', click on it in the treeview. This is where you will select which server to connect to. Alternatively you can use '/server [servername]:[port]' to connect to a server which is not listed. Our server is irc.hackthissite.org, so you'd type "/server irc.hackthissite.org" to connect. Note: No port is specified, so the default, port 6667 is used.
  5. Click "Ok" and now mIRC is ready to use. NNscript shouldn't be difficult to set up, it's basically the same shit as before.

Using mIRC / Miscellaneous Information:

Some irc networks may require you to register your nickname, or "nick", which is how people will recognise you. One such service is "NickServ" which is a service that keeps track of users and their nicknames.

This is how you use NickServ:

  1. /msg nickserv register [password] [email]
  2. Note: Some networks may send an "activation key/code" to the email address you supplied. Just enter the application code as it instructs. You are now registered with NickServ, you can use "/nickserv help" to list commands and other information.
  3. When reconnecting to a network you will be asked by NickServ to identify or change your name as it is registered. To do this use "/msg nickserv identify [password]" and you will "login" to your nick.

When joining a network you can obtain a list of channels using the "/list" command.

Channels are "rooms" where people congregate to talk. You can join one of these channels by using "/join #channel" or "/j #channel". Our channel is called #coffeesh0p, so you'd type "/join #coffeesh0p" to enter.

Conversely you can part a channel using the "/part" command.

To change your nickname enter "/nickname [desirednick]".

A Query, or PM is a 'private message', this is when you and someone else talk directly to each other in private. You can do this by using "/msg [nick] [message]" or "/query [nick]" to open a new window. If you can't manage that, double click the person's name and type your messages into the new window that appears.
